Genesis 12:1-3 (ESV)

Now the Lord said to Abram, 'Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you... and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.'

From the opening chapters of Scripture, God's rescue plan reached past a single nation. He called Abram to leave the familiar so that, through him, all the families of the earth would be blessed. That promise found its yes in Jesus, Abraham's greatest Son.

Our thirty days of preparation start here because this trip belongs to God before it belongs to us. The blessing He promised for every family on earth is reaching Arab families who have come to Michigan. We remember whose mission this is before a single bag is packed.

Psalm 67:1-2 (ESV)

May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us, that your way may be known on earth, your saving power among all nations.

Psalm 67 turns a familiar blessing outward. We ask God to bless us so that His saving power would reach all nations. Blessing received becomes blessing shared.

There is a reason we serve. Every ESL lesson, every repaired wall, every hour at the sewing table makes God's way known on earth, grace flowing through us to people who have not yet heard it clearly.

Isaiah 49:6 (ESV)

It is too light a thing that you should be my servant... I will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.

God tells His servant that reaching only your own would be too light a thing. His ambition runs to the ends of the earth. In Christ, and now through His church, that light keeps traveling.

Sometimes the ends of the earth come to us. People who once lived thousands of miles from any gospel witness now live a short drive from Angel House. God has moved the nations within reach of ordinary Christians willing to go.

Dearborn is home to the largest concentration of Arab people in North America, the ends of the earth brought near.

• Thank God that His salvation is meant for the whole world.
• Ask Him to make our team a clear and steady light.
• Pray for Muslims in Dearborn who have never heard the gospel plainly.
• Ask God to help you believe your small part belongs to His global plan.

Jonah 4:10-11 (ESV)

And should not I pity Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than 120,000 persons who do not know their right hand from their left...?

Jonah went to a foreign, hostile city, and he went reluctantly. When revival came, he sulked. God ended the book with a question about compassion: should He not pity a city full of people who do not know Him?

Jonah's question is worth asking ourselves honestly. Do we carry any reluctance, fear, or prejudice toward the people we are going to serve? God's heart breaks for the lost city, and He invites us to share that heart.

Like Nineveh, Dearborn is a great city full of people God pities, and He is sending us there on purpose.

• Ask God to search your heart for any reluctance or prejudice.
• Pray for God's compassion to become your compassion.

Matthew 28:18-20 (ESV)

All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations... And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.

The Commission opens and closes with comfort: all authority belongs to Jesus, and His presence goes with us always. Our going rests on a King who is already there.

All nations carries names this month: Fatima, Mohammed, Zayneb, Khaled, the students of Angel House. Making disciples begins with presence, patience, and love, and Christ's authority makes any of it fruitful.

John 3:16 (ESV)

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

The most familiar verse in the Bible is also the most sweeping. God loved the world, His love costly, personal, and gloriously wide.

The people we will meet are people God loves so deeply that He gave His Son for them. Our week puts hands and faces on a love that was already there before we arrived.

Every student and neighbor at Angel House is someone God so loved that He gave His only Son.

• Marvel again at the width of God's love.
• Ask Him to fill you with that same love for people unlike you.
• Pray each person you serve would come to believe and not perish.

Revelation 7:9-10 (ESV)

After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne...

Scripture ends where it began, with the nations. John sees the finished picture: a worshiping multitude too large to count, gathered from every people and language, singing salvation to God and the Lamb.

Some who will stand in that crowd are Arab men and women who have not yet heard. God has already guaranteed that multitude, and our work is the joy of joining what He will certainly accomplish.

• Praise God for the certain end of the story.
• Ask Him to let you see the eternal weight of one week of service.
• Pray for Arab believers to be added to that multitude.

Prepare

You are one week into preparation. Review your notes so far and thank God for what He is already stirring in you.

Acts 17:26-27 (ESV)

And he made from one man every nation of mankind... having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him.

Paul tells the Athenians that God arranges where and when people live, and He does it so that they would seek Him. The movement of peoples sits inside the purposes of a God who wants to be found.

The refugees and immigrants of Dearborn came through wars, hardships, and hopes, and underneath all of it God was positioning people to feel their way toward Him, often through a friendly face at a place like Angel House.

The very fact that these families now live near Angel House is, in Paul's words, part of how God draws them to seek Him.

• Thank God that He governs the movements of peoples.
• Ask Him to help you see immigration through His redemptive purpose.

Luke 10:33-36 (ESV)

But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion... Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor...?

Jesus answered Who is my neighbor? with a story about crossing an ethnic and religious divide to show mercy. He makes the despised outsider the model of neighbor-love, and He leaves no room to keep that love small.

In Dearborn our neighbor speaks other languages, worships differently, and may hold assumptions about Americans and Christians. Loving them well may cost us convenience and comfort, which is the whole point of the parable.

ESL classes, facility repairs, and sewing lessons are all ways of being the neighbor who stops, sees, and shows mercy.

John 4:9-14 (ESV)

The Samaritan woman said to him, 'How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?' ... Jesus said... 'whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again.'

Jesus broke three barriers at that well, ethnic, religious, and gender, to offer one woman living water. He opened with a request instead of a rebuke: Give me a drink. His own vulnerability started the conversation.

We will often be the ones receiving hospitality: tea, food, patience with our fumbling attempts at connection. Like Jesus, we can let genuine human exchange open the door before we ever speak of the water only He can give.

Deuteronomy 10:18-19 (ESV)

He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing. Love the sojourner, therefore, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.

God commands His people to love the sojourner, the foreigner, the displaced, and He grounds the command in memory: you were once outsiders too. Care for the immigrant flows straight out of the character of God.

Every believer was once a spiritual sojourner, brought near by grace we did not earn. Remembering our own rescue keeps our service tender.

• Ask Him for a tender heart toward the displaced.

Romans 10:1-4 (ESV)

Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.

Paul writes about people who are sincerely, fervently religious, and yet, he says, seeking to establish their own righteousness instead of receiving God's. He does not sneer at their devotion. His answer is a heart's desire and prayer for their salvation.

Many Muslims we meet will be genuinely devout, praying, fasting, honoring God as they understand Him. We can honor that sincerity and pray, as Paul did, that they would come to know the righteousness that is a gift in Christ.

Angel House students often show real reverence for God, and our prayer, like Paul's, is that they would find Him fully in Jesus.

1 Corinthians 9:22-23 (ESV)

I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings.

Paul flexed his preferences, customs, and comforts to remove every needless obstacle between people and the gospel. He held the message firm and adjusted himself freely.

Cross-cultural service asks the same of us: dressing modestly, eating unfamiliar food gratefully, learning a few words of Arabic, honoring customs around gender and hospitality. These acts are love clearing the path so the gospel gets a fair hearing.

• Ask God for a flexible, humble, learner's posture.
• Pray that you would gladly lay down preferences for others' sake.
• Pray that no needless offense would block the gospel.

Prepare

Learn three Arabic phrases this week: As-salamu alaykum (peace be upon you), Shukran (thank you), and Ahlan (welcome/hello).

2 Corinthians 4:5-6 (ESV)

For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord... For God, who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness,' has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Paul admits the gospel stays veiled to those who do not yet believe. A real spiritual blindness is at work. He is not discouraged, because the God who spoke light into being at creation shines that same saving light into human hearts. Conversion is a miracle only God performs.

This sets us free from pressure and from despair. We cannot argue anyone into the kingdom, and we do not need to. We proclaim Christ, we love people well, and we trust the Creator of light to do what only He can do.

Philippians 2:5-7 (ESV)

Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God... emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant.

The pattern for all mission is the downward movement of Jesus: from glory to servanthood, from heaven to a manger, from Lord to washer of feet. He did not grasp His status. He gave Himself away.

We go to Dearborn as servants. The most powerful thing about a short-term team is often the humility with which it shows up, people who look like Jesus by putting others first.

Colossians 4:5-6 (ESV)

Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.

Paul joins devotion in prayer to wisdom in public. Our words to those outside the faith should be gracious and seasoned with salt, appealing, thoughtful, shaped for the person in front of us.

In a cross-cultural setting, wisdom often means listening more than speaking, asking good questions, and setting aside the urge to argue. Grace-filled speech earns a hearing. Contentious speech slams the door.

1 Thessalonians 2:8 (ESV)

So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us.

Paul's ministry ran on love, not exchange. He gave people the gospel and himself, his time, affection, and presence, because they had become dear to him. The message came wrapped in real relationship.

A week is short, and presence is powerful. Looking someone in the eye, remembering their name, laughing at the sewing table, sitting with a struggling English learner, all of it says you are dear to me in a language that crosses every barrier.

Matthew 5:14-16 (ESV)

Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Jesus assumes His people's good works will be visible, and He fixes their aim on God's glory. Deeds of love open a window through which people glimpse the Father.

Facility upgrades, patient teaching, and kindness at the sewing machine all let light shine. Done in Jesus' name and joined to a ready word, they invite people to look past us to the God who sent us.

Romans 10:14-15 (ESV)

How are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, 'How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!'

Paul lays out a chain: people call on the One they believe in, believe in the One they hear, hear through a messenger, and the messenger has to be sent. Every link carries weight, including the senders and supporters back home.

Our team is a sent link in that chain, and so is everyone praying and giving to make the trip possible. We are also going to strengthen the ongoing witness of missionaries whose feet are already on the ground in Dearborn all year.

John praises believers who support traveling gospel workers, calling their care a faithful thing that makes them fellow workers for the truth. Coming alongside missionaries is a ministry God Himself honors.

A short-term team can drain a missionary or refresh one. We want to be the second kind, easy to host, quick to help, slow to complain, leaving the Grays and Susans more encouraged and better resourced than before we came.

1 Peter 3:15-16 (ESV)

In your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.

Peter tells us to be ready to explain our hope, and the how carries as much weight as the what: gentleness and respect. A truth held out with a harsh spirit contradicts itself.

Take time this week to put your own story into simple words. If a student asks why you came, or what makes you different, you want to answer clearly, warmly, and briefly, with obvious love and honor for the person asking.

• Ask God to help you honor Christ as Lord in your heart.

Prepare

Write your testimony in three short sentences: life before Christ, how you met Him, and what He means now. Practice saying it in under a minute.

Ephesians 6:11-12 (ESV)

Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood...

Paul reminds us our real struggle is spiritual. The people we serve are never the enemy. The enemy is the one who blinds and binds. That truth guards us against frustration with people and drives us to our knees.

As departure nears, expect resistance, in your own heart, in the team, in circumstances. Put on the armor now: truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, the Word, and prayer. We stand in God's strength, and He secures the outcome.

Acts 4:29-31 (ESV)

And now, Lord... grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness... And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit.

Facing threats, the early church prayed for boldness, and God answered by shaking the room and filling them with His Spirit. Courage in witness is something we ask for and receive.

Many of us feel timid about spiritual conversations, especially across cultures. That timidity is normal, and the answer is the same prayer the apostles prayed: Lord, grant Your servant boldness.

John 17:20-21 (ESV)

...that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

On the night before the cross, Jesus prayed for the unity of His people, and He tied that unity to the world's belief. The way we love one another is itself part of the witness. A divided team preaches a divided gospel.

Twelve people living, working, and serving in close quarters will feel friction. Decide now to overlook offenses, assume the best, serve quietly, and guard the team's unity as a sacred trust. Our oneness may preach louder than our words.

• Pray for deep unity among all twelve team members.
• Ask God to help you overlook offenses and assume the best.
• Repent in advance of selfishness or grumbling.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 (ESV)

My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness... For when I am weak, then I am strong.

God did not remove Paul's weakness. He redeemed it. Weakness became the place God's power showed up most clearly. This frees a team that may feel unqualified, nervous, or inadequate.

You do not need to be impressive to be useful. Your fumbling Arabic, your limited skills, your tired body, offered to God, become channels for His power. Boast in weakness. God does His deepest work there.

Galatians 6:9-10 (ESV)

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone...

Fruit comes in due season, often off our schedule. Ministry among Muslims usually moves slowly, measured in years of trust rather than days of results. Paul's word is plain: keep doing good, and do not give up.

We may not see a single visible result during our week, and that is fine. We are sowing into a long work God is doing. Faithfulness is our assignment. The harvest is His responsibility and His timing.

Psalm 126:5-6 (ESV)

Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy! He who goes out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, bringing his sheaves with him.

The psalm honors the tears of those who sow. Gospel work often begins in weeping, over hard hearts, over suffering, over how much remains unfinished. The promise stands sure: what is sown in tears will be reaped in joy.

Let yourself feel the weight of what you will see in Dearborn: displacement, spiritual lostness, longing. Bring those tears to God. They are seed, and God promises the sower will one day come home rejoicing.

Isaiah 6:8 (ESV)

And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, 'Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?' Then I said, 'Here I am! Send me.'

Isaiah's willingness came right after he saw the holiness of God and received cleansing for his own sin. A clear view of God and a clean conscience make a willing heart. Send me flows out of You are holy and I am forgiven.

As departure approaches, renew your yes. Let it be a worshipful yes that has seen God and knows His grace. Whom shall He send? By His mercy, you.

Acts 1:8 (ESV)

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.

Jesus' last words before He ascended were a promise of power and a plan for witness that reaches to the end of the earth. We witness in the Spirit's power, and our part is to be witnesses, people who tell what we have seen and known of Jesus.

Tomorrow the work begins in earnest. A witness does not need every answer. A witness tells the truth about what Christ has done. Rest in the Spirit's power, and be ready to bear witness with your life and your words.

As Joshua stood at the edge of a daunting assignment, God grounded his courage in one unshakable fact: the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Our courage rests on the certainty of God's presence.

You have prayed and prepared for thirty days. Now you go, with the God who has gone before you to Dearborn and stays beside you every moment. Be strong and courageous. He is with you.
