Whose Hand? A Monday Look Back at 1 Samuel 23-24

Yesterday we stood in a cave with David.

Saul had hunted him for years, and now the man who wanted him dead was right there, alone, close enough to kill. Every voice in the cave said the same thing his own men said: "Here is the day of which the LORD said to you, 'Behold, I will give your enemy into your hand'" (24:4). The throne was one sword-stroke away. And David wouldn't do it. He cut off a corner of Saul's robe, and even that wrecked his conscience.

I've been thinking about that all morning, and here's what I don't want us to lose.

David didn't keep his hand off because he was a naturally gentle man. He kept his hand off because he was sure of something. He was sure the outcome wasn't in his hand at all. Saul "sought him every day, but God did not give him into his hand" (23:14). And when God finally put Saul in David's hand, David handed the whole thing right back: "May the LORD judge between me and you... but my hand shall not be against you" (24:12).

So let me ask you the question the passage asked us. Whose hand does your future belong to?

Because most of us have a cave moment somewhere. Something within reach that we could grab by one act we know is wrong. A vindication. A relationship. A way out. The score we've been keeping warm, rehearsing the moment we finally get even. God will not leave you to secure yourself by a sin. Keep your hand off it, and trust His.

Here's the part I hope followed you out the door. You are not mainly David in this story. You are Saul, the one who warred against the LORD's Anointed and got mercy instead of the sword he deserved. David spared one enemy and waited for one throne. Jesus did more. He "did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped" (Philippians 2:6), refused the shortcut, and received the kingdom from His Father's hand through a cross. He opened His hands and took the nail so you'd be spared.

One more thing from the last verse. Saul wept, confessed beautifully, and went home unchanged. Emotion that does not turn a life is not repentance. Don't just be moved this week. Be turned.
