Looking More Like Jesus

Young or old, liberal or conservative, rich or poor, it really doesn’t matter, if you ask any Christian, “Would it be good for you to become more like Christ?” they will likely give you a resounding “YES!”

Then, if you ask them, “Do you have a long way to go in order to be like Christ,” again, they will say, “Most definitely.”

The next question is just as important: “What does it look like to look more like Jesus?”  On this question, people may stumble a bit.

For me, the easiest way to gauge whether or not I am becoming more like Christ is to ask this question, “Compared to where I was 3 years ago, am I be-coming more obedient to the Great Commandment?”  What is the Great Commandment? “You shall love the Lord your God with all of your heart, with all of your soul, with all of your mind, and with all of your strength.  And the second is like it, you shall love your neighbor as you love yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-39)

So that’s the question.  Do I love God more than I did 3 years ago?  Does my soul long more for purity? Is my mind increasing in an understanding of God and His word?  Am I doing a better job of taking care of my body than I was three years ago?  Is my heart for my neighbor increasing or decreasing?  Am I stuck in a rut?  Am I perhaps moving in the wrong direction?

These are personal inventory statements I give myself on a regular basis.  I know, of course, that I’ll never reach perfection in this life, but am I moving in the right direction?  Do I love God more and desire sin less?

When I’m not moving in the right direction I realize that I need coaching.  I reach out to those more mature than I am and ask for help.  Please ask yourself these questions today.

A life of being conformed to the image of Christ is no small challenge but it’s every disciple’s calling to become more like their master.  By His grace, let’s move in His direction today.
