Sixty years ago this month Dr. J. Harvey Saunders offered a young man his first full-time job at FBC Kenova. It would require that the young man finish up his WVU degree from a distance and begin the ministry right away. The young man accepted the position and moved to our little town.
That young man had three dreams. He wanted to raise a family that loved the Lord. He wanted to lead a church music ministry program. And he wanted to open his own music store. Kenova looked like the perfect place to begin. Under his leadership the choir grew to over 100 participants, and in an effort to keep the young people involved in the music ministry, a few years later he began the New Generation Choir. For years the music ministry was known, not only as one of the best in the West Virginia Baptist Convention, but in the entire nation. They led worship all over the country from the national Baptist Convention in Cincinnati and all up and down the East Coast to Palm Beach, Florida.
While he was leading at the church, he also pursued his dream of opening a music store. In short time he became one of the leading piano salesmen in the Mid-Atlantic region. You’d be hard-pressed to visit a local college our university and not find a piano from Dan Ferguson Music. Dan “The Man” has his name known far and wide. The Lord has made his name great.
But more importantly than all these things, Dan raised 3 beautiful daughters with Alice Lee, his wife of 60-years.
On Sunday, July 30th, members from Dan’s choirs throughout the years are making the trek back to FBC Kenova to celebrate what God has done through the music program under Dan’s tenure. Even Michael W. Smith and his family will celebrate the Lord with us. At both the 9am and 11:15am services, you’ll not only hear the choir sing some oldies and new songs, but a number of testimonies as to God’s faithfulness to His ministries at FBC Kenova over the last 60 years.
Between services, we’ll gather for a church family photo to be followed by a brief brunch in the FLC. Both services will follow the same format but we want everyone to plan to be out in front of the church at 10:15am so we can get everyone in what will be a historical photo.
Please be in prayer as people are making travel plans from all over the nation. It will be one of the biggest days in our church’s history and we want your entire family to be a part of it. God bless, we’ll see you then!
